About this Website

This website was developed with web standards in mind according to the recommendations of the "World Wide Web Consortium" (W3C). It features a separation of structure (data) and presentation (layout). The design is a pure CSS layout without tables as design tools and at least at the moment the site does not make use of JavaScript.

The advantages of standards compliant websites compared to traditional desings are, among others, reduced maintenance costs, faster download times because of smaller files, improved accessibility (accordance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0), and, to a large extend, device-independence.

For further information I recommend the book of Jeffrey Zeldman, in particular chapter two entitled "99.9% of Websites Are Obsolete" (as of 2003), but also the rest of the book is very instructive.

The following literature was extremely useful in building this site and each of the following books would get 5 stars on a rating scale from 1 to 5 stars:

  • Jeffrey Zeldman 2003. Designing with Web Standards. New Riders Press.
  • Eric Meyer 2002. Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design. Macmillan Computer Pub.
  • Eric Meyer 2004. Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nc Edition. Oreilly and Associates Inc.
