Collections of the Diptera Section
The ZSM Diptera collection comprises about 12500 determined species. About 1250 species are represented by type material (see table below). The taxonomic emphasis lies in Tipulidae, Limoniidae, Chironomidae, Mycetophilidae, Pantophthalmidae, Stratiomyidae, Tabanidae, Leptogastridae, Asilidae, Bombyliidae, Dolichopodidae, Syrphidae, Conopidae, Diopsidae, Tephritidae, and Tachinidae.
The dry collection (picture right) is housed in about 2200 drawers arranged in systematic order. Within families the main collection is followed by an addendum and undetermined material. The dry collection has recently been entered into an electronic database (species, number of specimens).
The extensive alcohol collection (picture right) comprises about 9700 PVC-bottles of various sizes. It contains several millions of adult specimens and/or immature stages. The collection is arranged in systematic order. Part of the determined alcohol material has been entered into an electronic database. The alcohol collection also contains extenxive unsorted material from all regions of the world, especially the Amazon region (mostly aquatic families), Thailand (ex coll. Malicky), and Europe.
The microscopic slide collection (picture right) contains about 60000 slide mounts of Chironomidae (all life stages). The main collection is arranged in drawers sorted alphabetically by genus and species. Most of the material related to faunistic or ecological projects is kept separately in slide boxes. The objects are mostly mounted in Canada Balsam or Euparal.
CHIRONOMIDAE Collection
With 2094 species the ZSM chironomid collection is one of the most important ones in Europe - regarding neotropical species probably the largest worldwide. The collection is predominantly based on donations from the Max-Planck-Institue Plön (collections A. Thienemann and F. Lenz) and the collections of E. J. Fittkau and F. Reiss. About 50% of the worlds species and 80% of the Palaearctic species are represented, about 500 of them by type material. The geographic emphasis lies in the Amazon Region, northern Germany and Bavaria. All species have been entered into an electronic database. Moreover an electronic type catalog has been compiled. Primary types are kept separately. Most of the related taxonomic literature is available in the ZSM library (reprint collections of E. J. Fittkau, F. Reiss, A. Thienemann).
During the tenure of E. J. Fittkau and F. Reiss numerous diploma and doctoral theses, as well as other projects on chironomids, were accomplished at the ZSM.
The Chironomidae will continue to constitute a major focus of collection and research activity. For future projects the collection holds ample unstudied and/or undescribed material from all regions of the world. Proposals for studying this material are highly welcome.
